In a recent episode of the TimberTalks podcast titled “Craftsperson’s Approach to Modern Timber Construction” Katharina Lehmann, the CEO of Blumer-Lehman, made many points but the ones I found salient were:
- CNC and Robotics are oversold – one needs to understand and prioritize low tech solutions first.
- The use of timber in any countries construction takes time – it took Switzerland over two decades to to use timber extensively; this in-spite of Switzerland having a history of traditional timber construction.
- Most engineers in Switzerland typically apprentice as carpenters first before going to engineering school.
